Over 180 Vaccines Administered at Back to School Bonanza

The nursing staff from The Children's Clinic of Lufkin and Angelina Pediatrics administered 182 vaccines to Angelina County students at the 2nd Annual Back to School Bonanza, a Junior League of Lufkin sponsored community project.   According to Misti Jones, a volunteer registered nurse from The Children's Clinic, vaccinations were given to some 93 children and a total of 131 children were screened to determine if their immunizations were up-to-date. "It is so important that children have these vaccines before going back to school in order to prevent communicable diseases, " says Misti.  "The Back to School Bonanza offers parents a way to access vaccines at no cost and thus ensure their child will get a healthy start to the school year," she adds.  This is the second year Misti has volunteered for this program.  She believes it not only helps these children, but the community at large, by stopping the spread of preventable disease such as tetanus, whooping cough and meningitis.  Thanks to vaccines, these diseases have become rare however, there have been reported outbreaks including the resurgence of measles and whooping cough in some areas.  Misti says making sure you child stays up-to-date with vaccinations is the best way to protect our friends, family, communities and schools from these unnecessary illnesses and even deaths.
